Golden Record | Cosmos Line | Carl Sagan | Unisex T-Shirt
Ultra-thin line-art rendition of the cover of the Voyager Golden Record. Launched aboard the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft in 1977, these phonograph records were created as a message to any intelligent extraterrestrial life that might encounter them. This design meticulously reproduces the intricate schematic engraved on the record's cover, which serves as a cosmic instruction manual.
The diagram is rich with symbolic information, including:
- Pulsar Map: A map indicating the location of our Solar System relative to 14 pulsars, using their precise pulse periods as a clock to pinpoint our position in space and time.
- Hydrogen Atom Transition: A diagram illustrating the ultralight spin-flip transition of a hydrogen atom, the most abundant element in the universe. This provides a universal standard of time and length.
- Playback Instructions: The remaining symbols provide instructions on how to play the record and decode the images encoded within.
The entire project was spearheaded by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan, who played a pivotal role in selecting the sounds and images—including music, greetings in 55 languages, and sounds of Earth—intended to convey the diversity of life and culture on our planet. This design celebrates humanity's profound curiosity and its audacious attempt to reach out across the vastness of space, embodying the spirit of cosmic exploration and communication.
